I visited the abandoned Weston State Hospital in West Virginia twice in the last few years. Both times were on legal photography tours, so I got to spend a lot of time there wandering the buildings and the grounds. The kirkbride is one of the oldest, one wing dates back to the civil war I believe. This photo was taken on the top floor of the main building, the women’s ward I think. It has a separate TB ward and forensic ward (for the violent and criminally insane patients). My first visit, the TB ward was open to us but on the second it had been locked down. Sometimes you just need to look in the mirror and self-reflect… I miss these old adventures. Taken in one of my favorite old abandoned asylums.

This lovey golden retro chair was found in an empty room in an old asylum. This was a room the doctor’s quarters, a section of the hospital where the nurses and doctors resided. I’ve visited here twice, it was such a beautiful place. The late afternoon light lent itself well to this area of the building, bringing out all the nice textures of the peeling and chipped walls.

A lonely wheelchair was found in this exceptional and pristinely decayed corridor in an abandoned wing of a state psychiatric hospital.

It’s like a room full of Skittles! Found in a patient ward in an abandoned psychiatric hospital, this was part of the recreation room. One of the best finds of my recent journeys, this place was just amazing to see in person after reading about it and seeing other photos. It took over a year to get there but it was a success.
