One beautiful sunny day at Letchworth State Park.
I’ve added a small gallery of recent infrared photos which can be seen here.

The Peace Bridge: it’s not the greatest looking bridge, but it’s been made a lot sexier by the installation of all those hot colored LED lights. I just love the night view of it.

This is one of my early on infrared photography experiments. It was probably the second time I went out shooting IR after I got my first Hoya R72 filter. Trying different ISO’s and exposure lengths, I finally achieved a decent enough exposure to work with. I chose a super long exposure at a low ISO for this shot, just to see what effect I would get with the movement of the branches in the wind. It turned out to look like trees full of fluffy cotton and the light was just right to produce the dark dramatic sky.

One hot summer weekend while I had some visitors from out of town, we all decided to go take a drive through the scenic southern tier of NY. Late afternoon summer sun is always prime time for shooting infrared. I spotted this small farm and decided to roam around and take a few infrared photos here.

I had visited Knox Farm in East Aurora, NY a couple months ago. Even on a cold winter day with no leaves on the trees, the sky and the light was just perfect for some infrared photography. I can’t wait to visit here again in the springtime.

Going through an old archive I came across some of the first photos I took of the Peace Bridge. Practicing some night photography and long exposures, my gear wasn’t the best but I managed to pull off a few decent shots I suppose.
This picture was taken long before the new LED lighting, so I decided to do a monochrome conversion to even out some rather odd color casts in the lighting. It’s not something I do often, but I like the feel it gave to this particular shot. Oh, and I like how the moon shows a bit more in the BW conversion :)

Wandering around the southern tier in New York we came across a lovely old farm with a couple nice horses and big barns. The cloud pattern in the sky was just fantastic and the sunlight was perfect for some infrared shooting. The proprietor of the property let us wander around her place… we ended up being there for a few hours. It was a great day.

Like the previous picture posted here, this photo uses the HDR technique, only done more subtle and “realistic” looking. But it’s more of a “hybrid” HDR I’d like to think, as I faded back the tonemapped HDR and blended in one of the original exposures using some masking. This was a very hard scene to photograph, shooting into direct sunlight. You either expose for the shadows or the highlights, there’s nothing in between… which is the perfect scenario for using HDR.
The day I took this photo was a gorgeous and warm late autumn day. I played...

Niagara Falls, USA/Canada. This view was shot from the observation deck near the American Falls during the beginning of the blue hour. Long exposure.

Peace Bridge, Buffalo NY. The new LED lighting system on the bridge was installed last year. The colors and patterns change often, sometimes too quickly to capture a single color. This night, I was lucky and was able to capture a pure green sequence.
