This is one of my early on infrared photography experiments. It was probably the second time I went out shooting IR after I got my first Hoya R72 filter. Trying different ISO’s and exposure lengths, I finally achieved a decent enough exposure to work with. I chose a super long exposure at a low ISO for this shot, just to see what effect I would get with the movement of the branches in the wind. It turned out to look like trees full of fluffy cotton and the light was just right to produce the dark dramatic sky.

Visiting San Francisco, California… doing the tourist thing and taking an open-air bus tour. This photo was taken downtown somewhere while stopped in traffic. San Fran is a the kind of place that even if I lived there, I don’t think I could ever tire of taking photos in this beautifully diverse city.

Farwell

Farewll to the Farwell. A trip to Detroit landed us to this building early one hot summer weekend in 2011. The hottest weekend ever to be out shooting anything, but it was my only chance to get to Detroit which at that time was pretty much last on my list of places to shoot urban decay. This building, on the inside and at it’s core, was very similar to Beekman Palace in the way the light court was designed. I believe currently the railings are gone and the Farwell Building is pretty much destroyed. Just like the rest of Detroit.

Riviera Theatre

Going through some archives since I haven’t been out shooting in months. This gorgeous chandelier hangs inside the beautiful Riviera Theatre located in North Tonawanda, NY. Very hard to capture with just one shot due to the high contrast of the lighting, this image is comprised of 3 photos at different exposures, traditional HDR process then blended with single exposures. A little time consuming to create the final image but worth it in the end. See more of the photo shoot here.

The beautiful Riviera Theatre in North Tonawanda, New York. A hidden gem… you’d never guess this beautiful interior resides in this small city just outside Buffalo. Gone Fishin’

I’ve been absent from my site here for a while. I’ve been absent from a lot of things. Those who know me know that I’ve suffered a severe tragedy in my life a few months ago, and I’ve been focusing most of my waking moments on that and will continue to do so for quite some time. Life since October 2011 changed drastically as I knew it, therefore my photography and any other “fun” things are on the back burner for a while until my situation gets under control.

I’ve had a lot of support from a lot of people, and for that I will be forever thankful. True friends show their true colors in difficult times, and you know who you are. I love you.

On the other hand, I still need to make a living so I am still squeezing in any paying photo work, so please still contact me if you have a shoot to be done.

Buffalo Unscripted

For those around Buffalo, it’s no secret that the Nation Preservation Conference is in town this week. The National Trust for Historic Preservation came to Buffalo over the summer to shoot a documentary about the city: “Buffalo Unscripted”. I won’t write so much about it because all the info can be found here:

I was lucky enough to be a part of it, being able to photograph Silo City and the Richardson Complex (while not that many my set of photos can be found here).

For the premiere showing of Buffalo Unscripted tonight at the Market Arcade theaters, I’ll have some work on display during a reception before the showing. I know it’s a bit last minute but that’s how it goes sometimes! Tickets are free and will go fast so get there early!

High Five

One of the best photographic experiences of my life was when I had the crazy opportunity to shoot one of the most prolific silent buildings on the east coast. Smack dab in one of the busiest areas of NYC, 5 Beekman Street finds it’s home just off the Brooklyn Bridge, near New York City Hall and the World Trade Center. I’ve followed and read elsewhere about this beautiful abandonment, always keeping in mind that this was one of the places I’d only dream about seeing in person, let alone actually photographing.

Until one fateful day back in the summer of 2011…
I get a phone call: “YOU GOT BEEKMAN!! Be down here in two days.”

Whaaaaat?! I was in disbelief. Seriously?? I wasted no time booking a flight and making arrangements. Two days later I was there, in awe, and still in disbelief. Until I went in. Into an abandoned building, in the middle of Manhattan, totally alone, quiet. The only person in an empty building watching and listening to the hustle and bustle of 6 million other people around you. And no one knows you’re there…

And then there was FIVE

The Palace at 5 Beekman, Temple Court, Beekman Palace… whatever you call it, words cannot describe it until you’re in it. Which is what I was, back in June 2011. There is no where else you can be in the middle of one of the largest cities in the world and be totally alone inside of a totally empty and beautifully decayed 9-story building. A rare opportunity to see… even more awesome to shoot. A beautiful atrium, ornate ironwork, solid woodwork. The Farwell building in Detroit mimicks Beekman but in my opinion doesn’t come close in the quality of work or attention to detail.

Soon this will be developed into a high end luxury hotel, so the timing was perfect. I will surely plan a stay here when it is done. Full set of pics below, and more to be added soon.
